More freight on rail!

The trucking industry is noted for its skill and success in extracting major concessions from Australian governments that aid truck efficiency and productivity. The rail industry can make no such claims. On the contrary, there are so many different rail regulatory systems around Australia that the result is more chaotic than efficient.

Yet rail ought to be more efficient than road. Much less energy is needed to roll steel wheels on rail than rubber tyres on asphalt and a train crew can carry thousands of tons - much more than the largest road rigs.

Obviously there are freight tasks that are unsuited for rail, such as "last mile" carriage. But the nightly convoys on major highways around Australia are carrying much freight that could certainly be on rail, which would have consequent economic benefits and road safety benefits.

Help us tell the authorities to implement policies that support rail freight. The policies already exist but get pushed aside whenever truck interests want anything.
